Shires runs away with half-marathon

William Shires of Charlotte (right) won the half-marathon by nearly 2 1/2 minutes and Brad Troxell of Fort Collins, Colorado, won the 5-k race as more than 350 runners competed in the 2007 Run for Green half-marathon, 5-k and fun run in Davidson. The race was held along the new greenway and town streets in Davidson, N.C., as a fund-raiser for Davidson Lands Conservancy.

Shires is a 42-year-old runner in the master’s division, but bested younger runners as well with a time of 1 hour, 21 minutes and 18 seconds. Shawn Rogers of Huntersville was second (1:24:00) and Nathan Stanford of Charlotte finished third (1:26:31).

Kaylee Keating of Indian Trail won the women’s division in 1:32:04.

In the 5K, Troxel clocked 17:30 to take the top prize. Greg Kielar of Stanley finished second in 18:29, followed closely by Joe Rao of Charlotte, 18:36.

Annette O’Flynn of Cornelius won the women’s division in 20:36, followed by Amber Bowels of Denver, 20:43, and Jenny Estill of Davidson, 21:15.
